Skin cancer : From the “nose” for U.S. researchers

U.S. researchers have intuition or rather nose.

They have shown that some skin cancers, especially basal cell carcinomas (cancer that appears on the surface of the skin as a papule (small red button which is on the skin and it dries) crusted) liberates an odor easily detectable by means of “electronic noses”.

The creators of this new means of detection have defended their work at the 236th annual conference of the American Chemical Society, which ended August 21, 2008 in Philadelphia (USA).

Michelle Gallagher, of the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, says proudly that “long, scientists suspect that the smell emanating from this type of skin tumors, but we are the first to identified assets and measure their components.”
